Evangelical legalism

W. Harold Fuller's account of the World Evangelical Fellowship gives this very true insight on how evangelicals tend to deviate towards legalism, that I believe is a tendency for all who really seek to live a life worthy of the Gospel.

I find this quote insightful since I'm often caught in a debate between charity and doctrinal purity. I always find myself asking if in evangelical circles the question of doctrinal purity is actually a manifestation of our love for doctrine more than our brethren?

Why is it that for a people who claimed to have been saved by grace it is very difficult for us evangelicals to exhibit God's grace?

Perhaps this excerpt from Fuller gives us useful insight for theological reflection:

Ironically, evangelicals can become as legalistic as the systems they eschew. This tendency may arise from the concern for truth, but truth that is encased in narrow traditions or culture can become hardened legalism.

'What is the essence of the Christian life?' asks Henry Brglez. Is it something we simply do for God? Calvin called that "legal worship." Or is the Christian life a gift for us to participate in the Son's communion with the Father? Unless we carefully work out what our relationship as believers to Christ is, we can very easily fall victim to a man-centered Christianity, promoting sself-justification and exclusivity because we based everything on our response, not on God's initiative.'

Evangelicals must constantly resist all such temptations and tendencies, for believer's only raison d' etre is Christ himself. The author of Hebrews warned his readers that 'we must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.' (Hebrews 2:1)

Look unto Jesus| Hebrews 12:1-2

Again here's another work in progress below is an introductory lesson that I gave to our sunday school class on the 12th chapter Epistle to the Hebrews

Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw of everything that hinders and the sin that easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race that has been marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1

Both the Greeks and the Latins frequently use the term cloud, to express a great number of persons or things.” (Clarke)1

The chapter begins with the phrase: 'great cloud of witnesses,' which is a phrase that is closely related to the names and people that were enumerated from Chapter 11, who lived by faith. To Roman Catholics, this phrase pertains to what is called 'The Communion of Saints,' which points towards the union or bond that all the saints (past, present and future), have in their common faith in Christ.

However, if we would look at the passage closely we will see that it is not suggested that these men and women now in heaven are watching us as we run the race, like people seated in a stadium. The word witness does not mean “spectators.” Others consider that these witnesses are not witnessing us as we conduct our lives. Instead, they are witnesses to us of faith and endurance. Our English word “martyr” comes directly from the Greek word translated “witness.” These people are not witnessing what we are doing; rather they are bearing witness to us that God can see us through. God bore witness to them (Heb. 11:2, 4-5,39) and they are bearing witness now to us. 2

What does it mean to 'bear witness,' this is a term that is quite important to the Quakers for to them bearing witness implies that in being a witness, to – let's say the resurrected Lord Jesus, we are called to a life of being a living demonstration of the resurrected life of the Risen Lord.

To become a witness, is to be a living testimony to the grace of God in Jesus Christ, to bear witness is to live out our testimony of faith to the object of our devotion that is Christ.

Hebrews 11, talked about faith and how faith is both a way of living in the context of and as a historical demonstration of, it is here that we find that the great cloud of witnesses is a living testimony of a people who have lived a life of faith, in God who also calls us to live a life of faith.

For it is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that we have been enlisted to a race that has been set before us.

Going deeper we find that we are called to do something, for as we believers we now have a demonstration of the lives that were commended by God because of faith, we in turn are called from what is the historical demonstration of into what is real and expected of us that we ourselves ought to bear witness to Christ with our faith. Here we are now called from orthodoxy to orthopraxy, for theology and its themes like Christology is not mere subscription to the doctrinal articulation of who Jesus Christ is, it implies the application of the doctrine of Christ, for Jesus himself in bearing witness to His person and divinity did not just give a statement of faith of who He is, He applied it in terms that can be seen in His earthly ministry.

For it is in His earthly ministry that Jesus lived a life of loving identification with us in all sorts and conditions of human life. In other words, He practiced the kind of love which is not mere benevolence, wishing people well from a distance, but that love which enters people's situations and makes their plight sympathetically its own. Jesus identified especially with those who experienced the depths: healing the very sick, and the destitute beggars, restoring the dead and dying to life, touching the lepers, befriending the outcasts, freeing the demented from demons of oppression and isolation, attracting the notorious sinners with his freely forgiving love. Finally, he ended up where any of these people could have ended up: a failure, condemned to perish as a criminal, agonizing in pain, deserted by his friends, forsaken by His God. He died the kind of death which symbolized God's verdict on sinful humanity: condemned to perish. He died expressing the tragic meaninglessness of the human fate: 'Why have you forsaken me?' As Jesus died he did not enter those depths where godless and godforsaken human beings can only cry out to God or for God or against God. But He did not enter them on His own account. He did so in consequence of the loving choice of identifying with others which He made in His life and sustained in His death. He died our death, sharing our failure, condemnation, despair and godforsakeness. 3

It is in light of this that we are now called to throw everything that hinders, no serious runner or athlete would run with weights, or baggages, that is why they wear aerodynamic clothing in order to run faster, the same could be said of us and our Christian lives, the weights here points towards the things that hinders our progress. They might even be “good things,” that may not necessarily be sins but are hindering us as individuals and as a community of faith from being good disciples and witnesses to Jesus Christ, here we can point towards the petty religiosity, that the author of the Epistle have reprimanded his Hebrew audience for in the early chapters.

Sin can hold us back. But there are also things that may not be sin (every weight) but are merely hindrances that can keep us from running effectively the race God has for us. Our choices are not always between right and wrong, but between something that may hinder us and something else that may not. Is there a weight in your life you must lay aside?4

Again were are reminded of the reality and power of sin in the life of the believers, which easily entangles us. This points towards the reality that first and foremost even if we are already redeemed in Christ, we are still living in the fallen word of Adam's sin, here we are reminded that sin and its consequences is still present and active in our lives and that if we are not on constant lookout, we will fall into sin and again be captive in bondage to a lifestyle of sin. For we still are part of the sinful world that have become tainted by the consequences of The Fall.

So easily ensnares us: Easily ensnares translates a difficult ancient Greek word (euperistaton), which can be translated four ways: “easily avoided,” “admired,” “ensnaring,” or “dangerous.” Some sins can be easily avoided, but are not. Some sins are admired, yet must be laid aside. Some sins are ensnaring and thus especially harmful. And some sins are more dangerous than others are. Let us lay them all aside!5

For it is in sin that we refuse to live a life in living participation to the life of faith in Christ. In sin, we refuse our community and prefer individual isolation with our bondage, we give up in meeting together in Christ. It is in sin that we lose our feeling assurance of our salvation, we begin to carry the weight of bagges especially in dwelling to a life of 'what ifs'.

The author of Hebrews calls us shed off our baggage and sins - to run with perseverance the race that has been marked out before us. What is needed is endurance, to finish what we have begun in Jesus Christ - a race that is set before us. God has set before us a race. We must run it; and it will involve effort and commitment. Just being passive never runs a race. God wants us to run the race, and finish it right!

In Acts 20:24, Paul pictures himself as a runner who had a race to finish, and nothing would keep Paul from finishing the race with joy. In that passage, Paul speaks of my race - he had his race to run, we have our own - but God calls us to finish it with joy, and that only happens with endurance. Race is the ancient Greek word agona, a word used for conflict or struggle of many kinds, and a favorite word of Paul (Philippians 1:30, Colossians 2:1, 1 Thessalonians 2:2, 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Timothy 4:7).

Endurance is needed to run that race. Endurance translates the ancient Greek word hupomone, “which does not mean the patience which sits down and accepts things but the patience which masters them . . . It is a determination, unhurrying and yet undelaying, which goes steadily on and refuses to be deflected.” (Barclay) 6

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

As runners we are called not to miss our mark, our destination – not to miss Christ.

The New American Standard Version translates this beautifully: fixing our eyes on Jesus. We can only run the race as we look to Jesus, and have our eyes locked on to Him. He is our focus, our inspiration, and our example. In the ancient Greek, looking unto Jesus uses a verb that implies a definite looking away from other things and a present looking unto Jesus. We must guard against seeing Jesus as only an example; He was and is so much more. But He also remains the ultimate example of Christian endurance.7

For as the great cloud of witnesses, was a demonstration of a life of faith, we are again reminded of the object of our faith and devotion, Jesus Christ, who in the Incarnation became the 'ultimate witness' to a life that is ran in complete obedience to the will of God the Father. But also as a demonstration of a life that is of the Divine that was able to finally free us from the baggage and sins that entangle us, thus enabling us to become finally able as humans to become participant in the divine life of God, that we are called to bear witness to as individuals and as a church.

This is a particularly interesting note for us as a church for we often boast of our Christ-centeredness, of our Christocentric theology here we are called again to bear witness to Christ by following His witness – that is His demonstration of the life that we His disciples are also called to follow and live for He is the object of our faith, for He demonstrated to us in explicit terms the life of faith in His redemptive act on the cross which was a demonstration of faithfulness to His calling, motivated by God's love for His fallen creation.

This is what the church is called to bear witness to – to proclaim in our pulpits, to animate in our ministry, as community of faith that gathers around Christ we are called to proclaim this Gospel as testified in the Scriptures and to incarnate this demonstration of devotion in our corporate life of worship, contemplation and discipleship for the Church herself is a revelation of God - who gathers a covenant community of believers that proclaims His Son and His Son's present and future Kingdom.

As individuals, we are called to look unto Jesus, we are called to look upon Christ8, by taking seriously His call to carry our crosses and follow Him, furthermore to also be crucified with Christ, and to live our lives in faith for this act of redemption was an act that was done in love for our salvation. Therefore it is only fitting that in view of these mercies of God in Christ we are called to present ourselves – our lives as living sacrifices to God9.

Now you may ask why should we keep our eyes fixed on Christ?

The answer is quite simple- we ought to keep our eyes fixed precisely because in His life, death and resurrection He initiated our faith, because our faith is based on Him as the Son of God, on Him as the Christ – the Messiah, the 'seed of the woman, who will crush the serpent's head10' as stated in the proto-evangelion, the fulfillment of Old Testament messianic prophecy, therefore the author of our faith. Take note that this is apart from the fact that Christ Himself as the Second Person in the blessed Trinity was also the reason by and for Whom all things were also made.

He is the perfecter of our faith – because in the accomplishment of God's redemptive purposes that came about in His death and resurrection we are set free from the Law, the wages of our sin and from the power of sin and death in our lives. By being able to meet God's demand for holiness in His sinless life in our behalf and by meeting God's demand for justice in His sacrificial death.

Christ on the cross is not only a demonstration of God's love but also a display of His righteousness. Christ's death allowed God to be both just and the justifier of all who believe (Rom. 3:25-26). 11 He is the perfecter precisely because He accomplished the task of reconciling sinful man with the Holy God.

He is the perfecter of our faith because in our response of faith in Christ we are able to appropriate this redemptive act of love and justice unto ourselves thus justifying us in God's eyes through the merit of the One who is the author and perfecter of our faith.

Jesus is not only the author of our faith; He is the finisher of it also. The idea of He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6) is comforting indeed to these discouraged Christians.12

Furthermore, we are called to look into Christ for His was a demonstration of joy in the midst of knowing His ultimate destiny on earth that will climax at the Cross. The passage says that the ultimate redemption of mankind in the cross on Calvary was a 'joy set before Christ.'

Jesus did not regard the cross itself as a joy. But He could look past the horror of the cross to enjoy the joy beyond it. The same mentality will enable these Jewish Christians (and we ourselves) to endure. One of the most prominent elements of the torture of the cross was its extreme shame. Jesus did not welcome this shame - He despised it! - yet He endured through the shame.13

Here we find that Christ, in His life as testified to in the divine kenosis – that is when He emptied Himself for us by coming into the world - being found in the appearance of a man and living a life of obedience to the will of His Father an obedience that goes far beyond mere obedience to a superior but an obedience to the will of God who seeks to to redeem us, an obedience unto death – even to the cross.14

Christ the author and perfecter of our faith has given us the perfect example of obedience – to God's will, to God who marked out the race of faith for us, to God who in Christ is our ultimate goal, that is Christlikeness in the escathon. This speaks of Jesus’ glorification. The same promise of being glorified after our shame (though in a different sense) is true for the Christian. 15

Lastly, we are again reminded that Christ, having finished and accomplished the completion of this race ahead of us and for us – is seated now at the right hand of the throne of God, as our Great High Priest, who intercedes on our behalf to God the Father. Christ seated at the right hand of God, whom as our High Priest enables us to approach boldly God's throne of grace16, in prayer whenever the we get tired and our strength wanes or when temptation and sins hinders us and cause us to stumble.

It is in Christ our Mediator that we can ask for second wind to help us run the race with perseverance.

Also Christ at the right hand of the Father implies also His place in God's kingdom of majesty where all power and authority is given unto Him where in time - every knee will bow down to, and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.17 Which is a very comforting thing for the Hebrew audience of the Epistle who are disheartened at the time, because they are persecuted for their faith in Christ. It is Christ who sits on the right hand of the throne that we are reminded that in time our vindication will come from Christ will will put everything under His judgment.

Thus, the passage here calls us to not only be like the great cloud of witnesses, but also to be reminded of the radical call to discipleship in the witness of Christ's life and redemptive work, but more importantly to faith in Christ who accomplished the race ahead of us so that we may finish the race that has been marked out for us.

It is here that we will see that as Christians we are all enlisted by faith to a race in this life towards Christlikeness, that will come when Christ will ultimately redeem us from the power of sin, in His Second Coming. We are called to run this race and to focus on our prize that is – Christ. But as we run this race we can all testify that we become distracted with so many things like our work, our studies, our everyday problems among other things that at times even our ministries serves more as a distraction that a means of living out our faith.

The passage reminds us that as runners we ought to keep our eyes fixed on the prize that is – Christ, who gave us all an example of a life that has been set with eyes of joy that is fixed on the prize that is our redemption through His death and resurrection.

Finally, the passage calls us to run the race with perseverance, so that ultimately we will finish the race in much the same way as the great cloud of witnesses. Like that of Pastor Andrew Tenefrancia who has gone to finish his race ahead of us. We are called to live our lives in the here and now to fix our eyes on Jesus Christ as we run this race of faith, a race that doesn't give merit to whether we finish it first place or last place for as long as we press on to finish it unto completion when we can honestly say to ourselves the very words of the Apostle Paul in his last letter to Timothy, that we have: “fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.” 18

In the end, we can only testify to the truthfulness of the testimony of the Apostle John when he proclaimed in Revelation 7:10 that: “Salvation, belongs to our God”. For the whole emphasis of the Bible lies on salvation being something the God accomplished in history and that belongs to God in His sovereignty.19

May these words of encouragement be a blessing to us as we press on in running the race that has been marked out for us.

Pastor Andrew Tenefrancia

I hardly knew him.

Yet his image was one that was entwined with the few rare instances in my life at Grace Bible Church that got me into interacting with him.

I hardly knew him.

But droplets of tears of empathy trickled down my cheeks two Saundays ago at the Vesper services' congregational prayer, as his GBC family cried out to the Lord for his healing.

I hardly knew him.

Yet the impact of his life and ministry is that I have been blessed with.

I hardly knew him.
And yet the church he has lead for a good portion of his adultlife, whose present leaders he have trained are aldo a good part of my adult life as well.

I hardly knew him.

But I am more than thankful that God used Him to advance His Kingdom through the ministry of Grace Bible Church.

I hardly knew him.
And yet the picture of him handing out a Gospel tract to a soldier peeking in the hatch of an armored personnel carrier will always be a reminder of dedication to the Gospel.

I hardly knew him.
But this I know. One day I will see him again face to face in the Heavenly abode as a kindred soul who finished the race ahead of me.

"The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
may the name of the LORD be praised."

Bonhoeffer on Discipleship

“God is a God who bears. The Son of God bore our flesh. He therefore bore the cross. He bore all our sins and attained reconciliation by his bearing. That is why disciples are called to bear what is put on them. Bearing constitutes being a Christian. Just as Christ maintains his communion with the Father by bearing according the Father’s will, so the disciples’ bearing constitutes their community with Christ. People can shake off the burdens laid on them. But doing so does not free them at all from their burdens. Instead it loads them with a heavier, more unbearable burden. They bear the self-chosen yoke of their own selves. Jesus called all who are laden with various sufferings and burdens to throw off their yokes and to take his yoke upon themselves.”

Lent

You are the anointed Son of God. You revealed God's nature to us all.

You revealed God, vulnerable and without pretense, in a manger. You showed us God teaching in the temple, amazing rabbis. Because of You, we saw God eagerly asking people, "What can I do for you?" We were surprised to see how delighted He is to respond with a healing touch. You showed us God, welcoming and embracing: "Come to me - I will give you rest." It was God You revealed there, using stories to feed empty souls and filling a multitude of bellies with just a few fish and loaves. We sat on the edge of our seats as we saw You command sea storms and resurrect the dead with a word! You left nothing to description and everything to demonstration.

This begins the sober season when we see You revealing God's nature in completion, leaving nothing to our imagination. You show us God's love: rugged, whole, no matter how uncomfortable it makes us feel. We are confused when He walks away from all our sensible plans to take a path to certain destruction, His eyes unflinchingly set on Jerusalem.

You show us that God is more than compassionate toward us. You prove God is obsessed with us. You show us He refuses to rest until all things are made new. We watch in horror as you demonstrate that nothing on earth can separate us from His love: not betreyal, denials, mocking and hateful scourging, not dishonor, not even torturous murder. We delivered up our worst. You show us God, responding with Your best. We are at once joyously amazed and embarrassed.

This changes everything. We can't decieve ourselves any longer with a religion of words, compulsion, ceremony, or acts of piety. We are drawn to worship in genuine adoration and devoted love. I cannot embrace a system of belief or code of behavior. Only a Person who loves us with an outrageous passion can be the object of worship. We worship you!

An interesting insight on Scripture

Below is a comment given by kim fabricius on Benjamin Myers' fascinating quote from Augustine over at the Faith & Theology blog.

"On my desk stands a small wood sculpture, the work of an unknown Tanzanian artist. It portrays an African woman on her knees. What captures one's eyes is her tattooed face, where a big smile is beginning to break through her otherwise severely symmetrical features. It is as if she is going to reveal a great secret which has given her deep joy. The secret obviously relates to the book with the cross which she holds high above her head.

"In this sculpture the artist wanted to capture the climax of a story often told in East Africa. A simple woman always walked around with a bulky Bible. Never would she part from it. Soon the villagers began to tease her: 'Why always the Bible? There are so many books you could read!' Yet the woman kept on living with her Bible, neither disturbed nor angered by all the teasing. Finally, one day she knelt down in the midst of those who laughed at her. Holding the Bible high above her head, she said with a big smile: 'Yes, of course there are many books which I could read. But there is only one book which reads me!'"

Faith Seeking Understanding: A theological reflection on Hebrews 11

Every once in a while I'm tasked to teach Sunday School at church below is a work in progress on our continuing study of the Epistle to the Hebrews:

Fides quarens intellectum”

The quote comes from a man named Anselm of Canterbury, an Italian Scholastic philosopher , theologian, and clergyman who held the office of Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Often called the founder of scholasticism, and as the archbishop who openly opposed the Crusades. Greatly influenced by Augustine, Anselm sought ‘necessary reasons’ for religious beliefs, notably the famous ontological argument for the existence of God.

I believe that Anselm gives us an interesting perspective on the way we intuit the reality of God.

In our day, it may seem difficult to imagine Anselm of Canterbury, as having much to contribute to the struggles of contemporary theology. The notions of partiality, relativism, and contextuality that mark our age do not allow us easy assent to Anselm's certainty concerning theological ideas. The confidence on reason he possessed seems foreign in an age in which the recognition of the historical character of human existence is often said to entail the abandonment of theological projects rooted in the past. 1

But one cannot deny that we are rooted in the past – in as much as Anselm struggled in articulating his fide – that is his faith - we are also called to articulate our faith especially in an age that questions the rationality of faith. Presenting the case for faith is one of the main themes of the Epistle to the Hebrews especially since the culmination of the Christology as accounted for in the previous chapters leads to a response on the part of the readers– and that is to live by faith, and before doing so one must first have firm grasped of what faith is in the first place.

Relationship of Chapter 11 to the entire Epistle to the Hebrews

The Book of Hebrews is a book that is constantly showing us something better. It is a book written to Jewish Christians who were tempted to bail out on Christianity and go back to Judaism. In this book we find lessons that show us that because Jesus Christ is better, there is a better way for us to live now. 2

The better way for us to live now is to live by faith. In relating the subject of faith as it is explored in the 11th Chapter of the Epistle we need to again to look back to the main ideas that are presented in the book by back tracking to the previous chapters, in order to the establish the Christological theme of the Epistle and its relationship with faith - for faith is the response to the revelation of God in Christ who is and will always be the object of our faith.

a. The Son - In the first part of Hebrews (Chapters 1 &2) the author of the Epistle introduces to us God's self-revelation in the person of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews explained it in this way:

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being. (Hebrews 1:1-3)

b. The Great High Priest (Chapter 3-9)- Jesus is "the great high priest." Christ, in the exercise of his priestly office, in the sacrifice on the cross, was not adorned with silk and gold and precious stones, but with divine love, wisdom, patience, obedience and all virtues. 3

When we think of Jesus Christ as our priest, we tend to think primarily of his death as an atonement for our sins, and that, of course, is a very important aspect of his high priestly work, an aspect we must never lose sight of. He teaches very plainly that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is a perfect sacrifice, that his death is a death, once for all, to pay for our sins and doesn't need to be repeated4. Nowhere in the New Testament do we find a clearer emphasis on the finality of the sacrificial death of Christ than we do in Hebrews:

For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Hebrews 9:24-26)

c. The exhortation of the above mentioned truths for the Church (Chapter 10) – Theological truths in the Epistles always have an ecclessiological implication primarily because the immediate audience of the Epistles are always the community of faiths that are situated all throughout the world of the New Testament. Of course I am speaking here aside from the implications of theology to the individual Christians, but also as individuals who are called into the Christian community that is gathered by the Spirit around the risen Lord, and this is apparent in the book of Hebrews as the theological treatise of the Epistle culminates with a call for the church:

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25)

Therefore to speak of in terms of the context of Chapter 11 in light of the entire Epistle we can conclude that - Faith is the state upon which we are called by God to respond to His self-revelation in Christ, because He is the Great High Priest and the once and for all sacrifice of atonement for His elect that is his Church.

What is faith?

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. (Hebrews 11:1-2)

"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). This passage is considered one of the most concise definitions of faith given in the Bible. Faith is synonymous with belief, and both are translated from the same Greek word: pisteuo in the New Testament. 5

See here that when it was defined in the passage that it speaks of several action words: 'being sure', and 'certain'. What do we hope for we hope for?

We hope for - imminent the Return of Christ, an end to injustice and that our present suffering is nothing compared to what God has in store for us. We hope He who began a good work in us will be faithful to finish His work on us. We hope that all things indeed work together for those who love God. These hopes are all given to us in the Scriptures.

While when we speak of certain it means here that we are certain of realities that we do not see with our eyes, but through the eyes of faith. It can be looked at as having bad eyesight cured with eyeglasses and it is with this eyeglasses of faith with that we see -that God exists as testified to by creation, we know that He controls the present age and that the laws of physics are kept in place by His hand. We know that Jesus is the One who brings us to God and that God indwells us through the Holy Spirit. By the eyes of faith that we are confident of our salvation by grace through faith in Christ.

All Christians are called to live by faith – that is Biblical faith.

Warren Wiersbe interestingly defined Biblical faith: “True Bible faith is confidence to God's Word in spite of circumstances and consequences. Faith is not some “feeling” that we manufacture. It is our total response to what God has revealed in His Word.” 6 Moreover faith isn’t an intellectual acceptance of certain doctrines or ideas. Nor is it merely a special psychological state. Rather, to speak of faith is to speak of the entire self in action. 7

Faith here as it was delivered is a faith that exists only in convenient times but also in trying times. That's why faith here is a construct that encompasses time, J. Oswald Sanders writes: “Faith enables the believing soul to treat the future as present and the invisible as seen.”8

One important word best describes faith: context, which theologian Benjamin Myers so compellingly wrote: “Faith occurs as my whole self responds to the reality of God. Faith is thus the total transformation of my existence. God addresses me; God confronts me; God calls me; God summons me into fellowship. God becomes more real to me than I am to myself, so that my whole existence is placed in a new context – in the context of God!”9

Perhaps as we continue the lesson further it would be fitting for us to spend the week in reflection of the truth that faith is a new way for us to live. That is living a life in the context of the truth that is revealed to us in Scriptures about God, who sought to actualize His love for us in the Person, ministry and atoning work of our Savior. Have we ever stopped to think about the profoundity of such thought?

Have we ever stopped to think that to live in the context of faith in Christ is to involve both our hearts and minds that means we ought not only to bear witness with what we know but also in trusting that God will use us to reveal Christ in a life that we live by fatih?

Karl Barth on Fundamentalism

If I had to rewrite this volume, I might not be so polemical, although the heresies would be the same. I might have a more irenic spirit. I could look out on the present situation and ask: what should the Christian proclamation be in view of all these denominations in Ecumenical movement, etc? But maybe the way I said it is clearer. Liberalism is coming back today, especially in Europe. Look at Rudolf Bultmann; he stems from Father Schleiermacher! And look at the situation in Switzerland! And the old snake in Rome is still there! I might have mentioned a third heresy: Fundamentalism, Orthodoxy. In 1932 I did not know the Fundamentalists so well. The Fundamentalists says he knows the Bible, but he must have become master over the Bible, which means master over revelation... I consider it just another kind of natural theology: a view of the modern man who wants to control revelation.

Christ: Greater than the angels - Hebrews 1:4-2:18

These days it is not difficult to find angels in popular culture. One only has to turn on their television sets and find shows like Touched by an Angel or Saving Grace, where angels are portrayed as powerful beings that intervene in human affairs, and those shows are just the beginning of our fascination with angels movies, magazine articles, novels, comic books have portrayed angels in shapes and sizes. In fact, even if you’d look at the ‘religious’ section of an average bookstore you’d even find non-fictional books about angels that most of the time deviates from how they were revealed to us in the Bible. However it is interesting to note that if one would browse those books it would not be very difficult to see Jewish underpinnings in them, after all angels are a Judeo-Christian concept, but as mentioned earlier these are far from Biblical revelation as most of them trace their theology from the mysticism of the Jewish Kabbalah.

Like many people today, many Jews had this thing about angels.

Many Jews had a superstitious or idolatrous respect for angels, because they had received the law and other tidings of the Divine will by their ministry. They looked upon them as mediators between God and men, and some went so far as to pay them a kind of religious homage or worship. Thus it was necessary that the apostle should insist, not only on Christ's being the Creator of all things, and therefore of angels themselves, but as being the risen and exalted Messiah in human nature, to whom angels, authorities, and powers are made subject.1

What are angels?

  • Angels are indeed special but they are like us also created beings.

  • They are Spirit beings. Psalm 104:4

  • Angels are at times referred to as the ‘sons of God’ (Job.1: 6; Genesis 6:1)

  • They are often God’s messengers. Throughout the Old Testament and even into the New Testament, angels delivered messages from God.

  • The angels, in some special way, were involved with the giving of the law. Acts 7:52-53

  • In spite of how special angels may be, the Lord Jesus is better than they are.

Looking at the Word

Hebrews 1:4 - Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

  • Names in the Bible were more important than they are today. Often names reflected a person’s character.

  • When Jesus had purged our sins, that is died on the cross, was buried and rose again, he went back to Heaven and sat down on “the right hand of the majesty on high.” No angel ever sat at God’s right hand. That position was reserved for the One who God called “Son”.

Hebrews 1:5 - For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

  • This portion of Hebrews contains many quotes from the Old Testament. Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee is a quote from Psalm 2:7.

  • Jesus has always been God, the Son.

  • But there was a time of special declaration that Jesus is God the Son. That took place at the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Acts 13:33, Romans 1:3-4

  • The second quote in Hebrews 1:5, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son, is a quote from 2 Samuel 7:14. This quote, though it partially refers to Solomon, looks ahead to David’s Greater Son or descendent, the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a tremendous father/son relationship within the Trinity.

Hebrews 1:6 - And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, and let all the angels of God worship him.

  • Jesus is called “the firstbegotten” or “first born”.

  • According to Warren Wiersbe “The title is one of rank and honor, for the firstborn receives the inheritance and the special blessing. Christ is the “Firstborn of all creation (Col. 1:15) because He created all things; and He is the highest of all who came back from the dead (Col. 1:18).” 2

  • When Jesus came into the world, the angels worshipped Him, showing His superiority.

  • Now you may be asking, “So Jesus is the Son of God, why should I be so thankful?”

  • You should be thankful if you know Jesus as your Savior, if you’ve been born again. This means that as the Son Jesus sits at the right hand of God. As the Son Jesus has special access to the Father.

  • Be thankful because the Lord Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for you! Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 7:24-25, 1 John 2:1-2

Hebrews 1:8 - But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. (A quote of Psalm 45:6)

  • What is a scepter? A scepter is a staff held by a ruler. It is an emblem of authority.

  • Our Lord Jesus has an emblem of authority. His scepter is a scepter of righteousness. He rules and will rule in righteousness. Isaiah 11:1-5

  • Be thankful! There is coming a day when nobody will be able to legitimately say that there is any unrighteousness anywhere. And what’s neat about this is that we, as Christians, are going reign with Christ in His kingdom!

Hebrews 1:9 - Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. (Ps. 45:7)

  • We are again reminded of Christ’s superiority because of His love for righteousness and hatred of iniquity.

  • If we know Jesus as Savior, we should love righteousness and hate iniquity also! We carry His name as Christians and should act accordingly. 1 John 2:6

Hebrews 1:10 - And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: (A quote of Psalm 102:25)

Why does the universe exist? Why does the world exist? Why do the wonders of nature exist? Why do we exist? It is because the Lord laid the foundation of the earth and everything is the work of His hands.

Hebrews 1:10-12 - And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: [11] They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; [12] And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. (A quote of Psalm 102:25-27)

  • Why this world is not even stable.

  • There is coming a day when this old world will be taken off and discarded like an old garment. It shall be replaced with something new. 2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 21:1-2

  • Through this Christ will continue to exist but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

  • Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever.

  • Now why should you and I be thankful for this stability of our Lord?

  • What has He promised to those that believe on Him for forgiveness and salvation?

  • He has promised eternal life! John 10:27-28

  • Jesus would not be able to give us eternal life unless He himself is eternal. He will never die. He is stable! Be thankful!

Hebrews 1:13 - But to which of the angels said he at any times, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? See Psalm 110:1

Jesus is superior to the angels. Jesus is waiting for His enemies to be made His footstool and He will reign for all eternity.

The angels, however, are not waiting to reign.


The angels are serving now and will serve in the future. In fact, we are and will be served by angels.

Angels are servants. God will use them to pronounce, protect and provide. But there is better news than this.

Be thankful because Jesus is superior to the angels. It is Jesus who sits at the right hand of God.

It is Jesus who is to be thanked and worshipped. If it weren’t for Jesus, the angels wouldn’t even exist!

CONCERNING SAINTS AND SINNERS: Look Out by Heeding the Word and Don’t Drift (2:1-4) (Warning to the Intellectually Convinced)

Saints and Sinners alike are to "take heed".

Hebrews 2:1 - (first of five great warnings interjected throughout the book of Hebrews) We (writer must be Jewish) must therefore (for this reason; because of Jesus’ superiority) pay even more attention to what we have heard (the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus), so that we will not drift away (slip away slowly)

Saints and Sinners alike are not to "neglect so great salvation".

Hebrews 2:2-3 - For if (a fulfilled condition) the message spoken through angels was legally binding (unalterable), and every transgression (willful act against God) and disobedience (sin of neglect and omission) received a just punishment (by God’s very nature, He can never be unjust; the law punished every sin, Jude 5 and James 2:10), how will we escape (the wages of sin is death; see Rom. 3:23; 6:23) if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first spoken by the Lord (See John 10:38 and Acts 2:22) and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.

Signs, wonders, and miracles confirmed the message to Saints and Sinners.

Hebrews 2:4 - At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions [of gifts] (miraculous gifts, like given to the apostles, not promised to believers in general, included healing, miracles, tongues and interpretation of tongues) from the Holy Spirit according to His will.

The message to Saints and Sinners was that of victory

Hebrews 2:14-15 – Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is – the devil – and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear off death.

The final authority of death is in the hands of our God (Deut. 32:39; Matt.10: 28; Rev. 1:18). Satan can do only that which is permitted by God (Job 1:12, 2:6). But because Satan is the author of sin (John 8:44), and sin brings death (Rom. 6:23), in this sense Satan exercises power in the realm of death. Jesus called him a murderer (John 8:44). Satan uses the fear of death as a terrible weapon to gain control over the lives of people.3

We who trust in Jesus Christ have once and for all been delivered from Satan’s authority from and from the fear of death. The death burial and resurrection of Christ has given us victory! (1 Cor. 15:55-58)4
